Short answer: If you want to stay fully inside Indian law, the best forex broker in India is any large SEBI-registered stockbroker with a currency derivatives segment, trading USD/INR and a few cross pairs on NSE/BSE. If you're going offshore anyway, Exness leads our data for Indian traders: UPI both ways, a 4.7 Trustpilot score from 33,688 reviews, 25 recent Indian reviews averaging 5.0, and no complaint flags. It's also on the RBI Alert List, like most brokers Indians actually use.
There are two routes. They don't overlap much, so pick one before you pick a broker.
Route 1: SEBI-registered brokers (legal)
Under FEMA, a resident Indian can trade forex legally only one way: exchange-traded currency futures and options on NSE, BSE or MSE, through a SEBI-registered broker.
| Feature | SEBI broker (currency F&O) |
|---|---|
| Instruments | USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, JPY/INR; EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY |
| Hours (IST) | 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (INR pairs); to 7:30 PM (cross pairs) |
| Leverage | Exchange margin only, low |
| Gold, indices, crypto CFDs | No (gold trades separately on MCX as commodity futures) |
| Deposits | Indian bank, UPI, NetBanking. Money stays in India |
| Protection | SEBI, exchange investor protection and grievance process |
| Catch | RBI requires a genuine underlying currency exposure for INR-linked contracts |
Most large discount and full-service stockbrokers offer the segment. Judge them the way you'd judge them for equities: does the platform stay up on busy days, what are the margin rules, and how fast does money land back in your bank? The rules themselves are in is forex trading legal in India.
Seven pairs, low leverage, an exposure rule. That's narrow.
It's also why most people searching "best forex broker in India" end up offshore. If that's you, know exactly what you're giving up.
Route 2: offshore global brokers (not authorised for residents)
Offshore brokers offer hundreds of CFDs, leverage of 1:1000 and beyond (Exness and Vantage list "Unlimited") and UPI deposits through local payment agents. None of them is authorised by RBI to offer forex trading to Indian residents, and many are named on the RBI Alert List. If a withdrawal gets refused, there's no Indian regulator to call. Top offshore picks for Indian traders
We picked these from our data with Indian traders in mind, favouring UPI support, Indian review scores and a clean complaint record. "Verdict" is our overall score: payout record (35%), leverage (25%), licence safety (25%) and service (15%). Method: how we rank. "India TP" is the average star rating from reviewers in India within the most recent ~100 Trustpilot reviews we sampled. We only show it where there were at least 5.
| Broker | Verdict | UPI | Trustpilot (global) | India TP | Complaint flags | RBI Alert List | Max leverage | Min deposit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exness | 9.9 | Deposit and withdrawal | 4.7 (33,688) | 5.0 (25) | None | Yes | Unlimited | $10 |
| Vantage | 9.0 | Deposit | 4.4 (15,615) | 4.4 (35) | None; Trustpilot warning | Yes | Unlimited | $50 |
| Fusion Markets | 9.0 | No | 4.8 (10,127) | 4.5 (13) | None | Yes | 1:500 | $0 |
| IC Markets | 9.8 | No | 4.8 (57,198) | Too few | None | Yes | 1:5000 | $0 |
| Octa | 8.1 | Deposit | 3.7 (9,953) | 3.7 (77) | None | Yes | 1:1000 | $25 |
| NordFX | 6.3 | Deposit and withdrawal | 4.4 (70) | 4.2 (24) | None | Yes | 1:1000 | $10 |
Exness
The strongest all-round option for India in our data. UPI works both ways, and you also get IMPS/NetBanking, cards, Skrill, Neteller and crypto. Exness says over 98% of withdrawals are processed automatically, and it doesn't charge a withdrawal fee of its own. Licences include FCA and CySEC alongside several offshore regulators (Seychelles, BVI, Belize, Mauritius among them), so check which entity your account actually opens under. On the RBI Alert List. More: Exness UPI deposit, Exness withdrawal time.
Vantage
UPI and INR bank transfer for deposits. Withdrawals go out by other methods. Requests are generally processed within 24 hours, with funds arriving in 1 to 7 business days. Indian reviewers in our sample give it 4.4 across 35 reviews. One thing we flag: Trustpilot shows a notice that the company "may be associated with high-risk investments". Licences are FSC Mauritius, FSCA and VFSC, so its best tier is 2, not 1. On the RBI Alert List.
Fusion Markets
No UPI. Good record, though: 4.8 on Trustpilot and 4.5 from 13 Indian reviewers, most withdrawals processed in under an hour, and no withdrawal fee (minimum $10, or $35 by wire). Licences: ASIC, VFSC and FSA Seychelles. On the RBI Alert List.
IC Markets
Second-highest verdict overall at 9.8, and the biggest Trustpilot base in this table (57,198 reviews, 4.8). No UPI, so Indians fund by card, e-wallet or crypto. We don't have enough Indian reviews in our sample to show a local score. On the RBI Alert List.
Octa
UPI deposits. Withdrawals by e-wallet or crypto, processed in 1 to 3 hours according to Octa, with no withdrawal fee. Indians review it more than any other broker in our sample (77 reviews), averaging 3.7. That's exactly its global score. On the RBI Alert List.
NordFX
UPI in and out, plus PayTM, GPay, PhonePe and IMPS withdrawals. Indian reviews are positive (4.2 from 24). But the regulation is thin: FSC Mauritius plus a Saint Lucia company registration, which is why its verdict sits at 6.3. The global Trustpilot base is tiny at 70 reviews, and India bank/IMPS withdrawals cost 4%. On a ₹1 lakh withdrawal that's ₹4,000. On the RBI Alert List.
Brokers with India complaint flags
Complaint flags are recurring themes we found in recent Trustpilot reviews, worldwide or from Indian reviewers. They don't prove wrongdoing. They're still the first thing we'd check.
| Broker | UPI | India TP | India flags | Global flags | Trustpilot status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XM | Deposit | 1.0 (30) | Deposits not credited, withdrawals refused, poor support | Withdrawals refused, profits cancelled | Score hidden: breach of guidelines (fake reviews removed) |
| Tickmill | No | 1.4 (9) | Deposits not credited, withdrawals refused | Withdrawals refused, poor support | 2.3 |
| RoboForex | Yes | 1.0 (9) | Withdrawals refused, deposits not credited, poor support | Withdrawals refused | 2.0 |
| STARTRADER | Deposit | 1.0 (7) | Withdrawals refused | Withdrawals refused | Notice: regulatory attention |
| PU Prime | No | 1.4 (5) | Withdrawals refused | Withdrawals refused | Score hidden: breach of guidelines |
XM is the one that surprises people. It's a big, well-known brand with Tier-1 licences (ASIC, CySEC), yet the 30 Indian reviews in our sample average 1.0 and keep pointing to deposit and withdrawal problems. HFM's 5 Indian reviews average 1.8, and it carries a global "withdrawals refused" flag. Alpari's 46 Indian reviews average 2.2.
Which brokers accept UPI?
From our data, these brokers list UPI for Indian clients:
| Broker | UPI deposit | UPI withdrawal | RBI Alert List |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exness | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| NordFX | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Vantage | Yes | No (other methods) | Yes |
| Octa | Yes | No (other methods) | Yes |
| XM | Yes | No (other methods) | Yes |
| STARTRADER | Yes | No (other methods) | No |
| RoboForex | Listed | Listed | No |
| Xellion Markets | Listed | Listed | No |
FP Markets lists "Rupee Payments" and local bank transfer, but we haven't confirmed UPI. Keep in mind where the money actually goes: a UPI deposit to an offshore broker usually lands in a payment agent's Indian bank account, not the broker's. If that account is frozen, your money can get stuck in the middle. Check each broker's page, for example Vantage UPI deposit.
How to choose: withdrawals first
- Withdrawals over spreads. A broker that saves you 0.2 pips (about $2 a standard lot on EUR/USD) but sits on a withdrawal for three weeks costs you more. Check the withdrawal method you'll actually use, not the headline.
- Read Indian reviews, not just the global score. XM's licences say one thing; its 1.0 average from Indian reviewers says another.
- Check which entity you sign with. An FCA or ASIC logo on the homepage doesn't mean your account sits under that regulator.
- Treat leverage as a risk setting. At 1:1000 a 0.1% move wipes the margin. Size trades with the lot size calculator.
- Test with a small withdrawal before you scale deposits.
